I think about a carputer from time to time as well. I thought the Zem was a way to reburn the ECU's maps at will , while the car was running. In other words, the car is always running from the ECU, and if the computer is switched off the car wouldn't care, so long as you weren't in mid-reburn. You seem to imply that the Zem is "always live", in other words, continuously reburning the ECU or even running software in place of the ECU. I didn't expect that. It seems to me that running the car on a "live" Zem at all times is asking for trouble in the case of a CPU crash, or even a "hang" where the disk drive is being accessed for a long time. I don't know what impact, if any, these (all too frequent) occurances would have on the car. Remember, if you have a carputer, it is probably also your mp3 player, the video player, maybe even GPS, and such. Could you correct me on the technical detail of how dependent the car's operation is on the Zem running uninterupted? If the Zem doesn't need to be live the whole time, I don't see a downside of a carputer other than expense and complicated install. A Zem is an obvious thing to add to the carputer.
